Providencia and the small island of Santa Catalina are connected by the Lover’s Bridge, a floating wooden structure whose railings are painted in colors that allow ships to pass through a narrow tunnel. The channel over which the bridge is built was dredged by pirates in the 17th century to protect both islands from invaders.
