GUAPI
CAUCA - PACIFIC
At the end of the 18th century, in 1772, the Spaniard Manuel de Valverde founded the port town on the Guapi River. The first inhabitants were the Guapí Indians, who lived in a place called Firme del Barro. The population of Guapi is estimated at 30,000 inhabitants (guapireños). The main economic activities are commerce, artisanal fishing, mining and agriculture.
Ninety-seven percent of its inhabitants are Afro-Colombian; the remaining 3% are distributed between indigenous (0.35%) and mestizo (2.65%). In general, the municipality has a population density of 23 inhabitants per square kilometer, but by ethnic group the density changes to 18 inhabitants per square kilometer for Afro-Colombians and 3 persons per square kilometer for other ethnic groups. The majority of the Afro-Colombian population is located in the municipal capital; a large proportion of indigenous and mestizos live in rural areas.
